Norway launches national call for the SOLSTICE II consortium

The Research Council of Norway has opened a national call for proposals to select the Norwegian research consortium that will take part in the SOLSTICE II – Social Cohesion in the Context of Climate Policy joint call with a German partner, building on the SOLSTICE I programme.

Rather than focusing on technological or environmental solutions alone, SOLSTICE set out to explore how climate change reshapes the way people live, consume, and engage in society, and how societal transformation towards climate resilience can be enabled and accelerated. The call brought together interdisciplinary consortia of scientists to work across three thematic areas: social justice and participation; sense-making, cultural meaning and risk perceptions; and transformative finance and economy. Through this approach, SOLSTICE gave SSH researchers the opportunity to form interdisciplinary collaborations, deepen understanding of climate change’s societal impacts, engage with societal actors through innovative approaches, and ultimately help trigger meaningful transformational change.

SOLSTICE II builds on the previous call, to turn to the societal prerequisites for effective and legitimate climate policy — including social cohesion, public support, and the governance of climate mitigation, adaptation, and related transformation processes. The Norwegian call, published on 3 July 2026, is open exclusively to approved Norwegian research organisations, which must form a consortium of 4–5 partners with strong social science expertise, international networks, and experience in interdisciplinary synthesis work, in order to represent Norway alongside Germany and other international partners. The Research Council of Norway will award NOK 20 million (approx. 1.8 million Euros) to fund one consortium for a project running 36 to 60 months, expected to start between 1 November and 1 December 2026. The application deadline is 23 September 2026, at 13:00 CEST.
