Equinox Workshop: Societal transformation in the face of climate change

Following on from COP30 and part of the influential Equinox Process, this one-day workshop will bring together decision-makers, research funders, researchers and other stakeholders. They will include representatives from the Horizon Europe Mission on Climate Change Adaptation and Mission Climate Neutral Cities.

Leading climate researchers will showcase latest developments and share knowledge gaps, presenting to policy makers and research funders projects and activities on societal transformation in the face of climate change that are relevant for climate action.

The agenda is aimed at decision/policymakers and policy advisers at EU/European and national level; research funders; science and research umbrella organisations including Horizon Europe; European Parliament members and attachés; representatives of the European Parliament Research Service (EPRS),and European IPCC focal points.

Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) have an essential role to play, alongside trustworthy climate science, in enabling  societal transformation towards a low-emission society and just effective climate adaptation and will be central to this event.

Key questions to be addressed:

• How should governance and policy be designed to drive effective and legitimate societal transformations for climate action?
• How can wider public engagement and change of practices be enabled among citizens, businesses and political institutions to advance climate action?
• What are trade-offs and co-benefits between climate policy and other policies?  (environmental, competitiveness, security, agricultural etc.)

The workshop is organized under the framework of the Equinox Process, operated by JPI Climate and supported by the EU-project MAGICA Climate Project.  Equinox accelerates the transfer of up-to-date climate science into policy by systematically bridging research and transformative climate action.

The workshop is linked to the JPI Climate Action Group Enabling Societal transformation (EST) that has completed a second call in this area in 2023 with seven transnational projects (funder under SOLSTICE), based on a white paper published in 2019.

Its outcomes are intended to provide recommendations to research funders to address key research gaps and advance societal transformation for climate action. These insights will also support JPI Climate funders in shaping the scope and content of the next phase of the SOLSTICE call.

A parallel science-policy Equinox Workshop takes place at BELSPO on December 11 and December 12 – EQUINOX Dialogue on Modelling the Economics of Climate Change. There are two separate programmes set clear agendas but with opportunities for cross-fertilisation and networking at a joint reception and lunch. We strongly encourage participants to engage with both workshops and make the most of the shared spaces for dialogue, learning and collaboration.
