Nordic Tipping Week

In response to the Open Letter to the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Nordic Tipping Week is being organised in Finland, funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers, and will bring together experts, local communities, and stakeholders to explore the potential impacts of a tipping point in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) on the Nordic region. The event will take place over four days in two locations:

• Helsinki (21-23 Oct): Focused on the interdisciplinary science of AMOC tipping and its broader impacts on climate, ecosystems, and society.

• Rovaniemi (24 Oct): Centred on local knowledge, the adaptive capacity of northern livelihoods, and stakeholder interaction. This session will follow a Heritage Futures format, in collaboration with the University of Turku Futures Research Centre.

The workshop will result in a draft outline for a report on AMOC tipping risks and adaptation strategies specific to the Nordic region. This report will be coordinated by the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

The Nordic Tipping Week is organised in coordination with JPI Climate and JPI Oceans, with the workshop’s outcomes, including its report, feeding into the broader scientific assessment on AMOC currently underway through the JPIs’ joint initiative.
